FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Should Pro-Stat® be administered via the Y-port or directly into the enteral feeding?
Pro-Stat® is always administered in the same manner as a medication, via the Y-port. Pro-Stat® is never added directly into the tube feeding formula for HACCP / infection-control purposes and compatibility of enteral feeding.

  2. How do you administer Pro-Stat® to the patient on bolus feedings versus drip or pump feeding?
Pro-Stat® is administered in the same way as a medication, regardless of whether a patient is on a pump or receiving bolus feedings.

  3. Should the tube be flushed before and after administering Pro-Stat® or just after? How much fluid should be used?
Feeding tubes should be flushed both before and after administering a dose of Pro-Stat®. This will not only increase a resident’s fluid volume, but clear any fibers or residue build-up in the enteral tube. The only exception to this rule is if a patient is on a volume restriction or fluid controlled diet. Consult the dietitian and/or physician in these cases. After administering Pro-Stat® flush with 30 ml of water. Handle Pro-Stat® as you would any liquid medication. More fluids will be needed if additional medications are given at the same time. When the order includes hydration, add additional water before and after Pro-Stat® and medications.

  4. What about patients on fluid restrictions? Is Pro-Stat® counted as a fluid?
For patients on fluid restriction (for renal dialysis, CHF, ARF, etc), count 50% of the total volume of Pro-Stat® as a fluid.
